Fort à la Corne Island Forest offers a quiet, authentic boreal‑forest experience—wide skies, sandy trails, mixed woodland, and abundant wildlife—ideal for visitors seeking space and solitude. The Gronlid Cross Country Ski Trails are located approximately 46 km north of Melfort and just a 10‑minute drive from Wapiti Regional Park and Ski Resort.
Fort à la Corne Island Forest is one of only two unique provincial “island forests” in Saskatchewan, surrounded entirely by farmland. This distinctive landscape showcases a remarkable transition between parkland and boreal forest, shaped by ancient glacial activity. Known for its spectacular year‑round views, the Ridge Trail follows the southernmost esker of the Narrow Hills formation, offering elevated scenery unlike anywhere else in the region.
Well‑maintained trails wind up and down gentle ridges through a beautiful mix of birch bluffs, leafy aspen groves, and deep pine forests, creating a peaceful wooded retreat within the prairie landscape. Because this forest stands alone amid agricultural land, wildlife is often more concentrated here than in surrounding areas. Visitors should treat the area as active wildlife country and be prepared for possible encounters.
Please help protect this unique and special place by practicing Leave No Trace principles during your visit. Outdoor bathroom facilities are located on site.
Maps with elevations will be available in the future. In this version, the 2.5 KM Fun Run Powerline connector between Cabin and Skate are not shown. Distances will be GPS updated along with elevation data.
