The Kollective is a new ride series rooted in connection, community, and a shared commitment to safer roads across Ontario. It brings together the Share the Road Cycling Coalition (The Coalition) and Racer Sportif—two organizations linked by a long-standing partnership and a shared dedication to building a safer cycling culture.
That partnership began in 2006, after OPP Sergeant Greg Stobbart was killed by a motorist while training on his bike near his home in Burlington. Greg had purchased his bike from Racer Sportif, and in the months following his death, the shop helped organize the first community ride in his honour. That September event marked the beginning of a movement for cycling safety in Ontario. On September 20th, the 20th anniversary Share the Road Gran Fondo will take place in Halton Hills at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre.
Greg’s death was preventable. The driver who struck him had five convictions for driving under suspension, four for driving without a license, $15,000 in unpaid fines—and two months after killing Greg, he hit another person.
In response, Greg’s widow, Eleanor McMahon, mobilized cyclists across the province. She founded the Share the Road Cycling Coalition in 2007 and successfully advocated for stronger penalties for suspended drivers, leading to the passage of Greg’s Law in 2008. Additional legislative reforms, road safety campaigns, and major provincial investments in cycling infrastructure followed. The Coalition continues this work today, supporting municipalities, advancing provincial advocacy, and promoting safer roads for all.
Throughout this journey, Racer Sportif and the Coalition have remained closely aligned in their efforts to support cyclists and improve road safety and relationships between cyclists and motorists. Their shared history forms the foundation of the Kollective.
The Kollective builds on this legacy by offering a series of thoughtfully organized rides throughout the summer—creating space for riders to connect, build community, and engage more deeply with the broader network of cyclists, advocates, and partners. The goal is not only to deliver a high quality riding experience, but also to strengthen the social fabric of Ontario’s cycling community.
A key focus of the initiative is welcoming a new generation of riders. By offering an accessible and inclusive entry point, the Kollective introduces younger cyclists to the sport’s culture and community while connecting them to the values that guide Share the Road and its partners.
Through this series, the Kollective brings together community, advocacy, and culture—honouring where cycling in Ontario has been and helping shape where it is going.
