My Story…
My dad, Jim Hollister and the youngest of six, was born in Barrington in 1925. On October 23, 1931 he came home from school with a temperature and was later diagnosed with polio that affected his right leg.
His mother kept a journal from that day until the last entry on December 18, 1931 detailing their quarantine, his illness, and gifts from neighbors, family, and friends. Her fear for her son was palpable in those entries.
My dad recounted how the doctor tied weights to his ankle to stretch his leg straight while he was in bed and how incredibly painful it was. He recovered and was left with a limp and weaker leg.
I never want a parent to have to watch their child suffer from this preventable disease and no child should have to have their future altered when a simple vaccine is available to protect them against polio.
Please support me in my walk to raise funds to help eradicate polio worldwide.
