Why a 5k?
The 5K for Brandon Lee & Land Defenders started in 2024. This August 2026 marks the 7th year since Brandon was shot by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in an assassination attempt. He was targeted by the Philippine state for organizing in solidarity with indigenous communities in the Cordillera for nearly a decade.
As Brandon continues to require funding for his long-term care, this 5K fundraiser aims to garner awareness of his story, support his needs, and extend solidarity to land defenders in the Philippines. Read this article to learn more about Brandon Lee and the repression of land defenders in the Philippines and worldwide.
This year, on April 19, 2026, Brandon's long time friend and fellow ICHRP-US organizer, Lyle Prijoles, was killed in a massacre of 19 people by the AFP in Toboso, Negros Occidental. Lyle was in the Philippines to learn about the conditions of sugarcane and farmworkers on Negros Island. The region has historically been known as the sugarbowl of the Philippines, but is now known as the "massacre capital" of the country due to the notorious state violence against farmworkers asserting their rights against ruthless landowners and plantation owners.
Brandon and Lyle dedicated their lives to fighting for justice for the Filipino people and their fight for land, life, and livelihood. We dedicate this year's run to Lyle Prijoles, Kai Sorem, RJ Ledesma, Maureen Santuyo, Alyssa Alano, and to all of the victims of the Toboso massacre. Justice for the Negros 19! Stop the Killings in the Philippines!
