Why We Race: The science of challenge, motivation, and what keeps runners coming back
People show up to races for all sorts of reasons. Some—but not all—of them keep coming back, year after year, race after race. They've conquered what London Marathon founder Chris Brasher famously called "the great suburban Everest," but they still want more. Understanding what fuels these committed racers is crucial to building successful events and a thriving national running culture. In this session, we'll dig into the neuroscience and psychology of the runner's brain, addressing topics including the Effort Paradox (why making things harder sometimes makes us like them more); social energetics (how our brains respond to mass participation events like races); internal self-talk monologues; and the elusive and often misunderstood runner's high. When runners get a chance to pursue these experiences in the right context, they're eager to come back for more.

Julie Hambleton - SheRACES
Julie Hambleton is a life-long xc and road runner turned trail runner, born and raised in the Niagara region of Ontario. As the Global Development Lead for SheRACES, she is working hard to help race directors around the world remove additional barriers to women getting on their start lines. SheRACES aims to educate both athletes and race organizations on these barriers and the simple things that can be done ensure that more women find their place on the start line and, once they get there, that they have an incredible experience.
She will be speaking about the barriers that exist that prevent women from getting involved in endurance sports, the specific ways that race organizers and organizations can support women, and how SheRACES works with race directors to improve female participation at their events (and why race directors should be setting this as a goal for their race!).
