A properly fitted harness is integral to your dog’s success on the trail. When we put a harness on our dog to practice harness dog sports, the goal is that the dog is comfortable and free to pull safely and easily. The wrong shape, wrong size, wrong style can all negatively affect your dog’s experience and your performance as a team. We absolutely want to avoid equipment that causes the dog to change their natural running gait and this may increase the risk of physical injury to the dog in the short and/or long term.
Your dog needs a harness that supports their body through the sternum and does not slip into the armpits or fall on the shoulder. It needs to be proportioned properly so tension is distributed properly and it needs to be well placed on their chest and through the shoulders so the dog can freely run. The pleasure the dog gets from practicing these sports and their ability to work with you safely depends on the comfort and fit of their harness.
But how do you know what to select? With a variety of brands and styles on the market, it can be overwhelming to know what is best for your dog. At DogRunnin our resident fit tech is the best in the business! A wizard with a measuring tape and an eye for understanding the nuance of your dog’s body shape, Stéphanie is able to get the best fit from wherever you happen to be in the world.
