Raise money for University of Waterloo Women’s Sport Initiative
About the University of Waterloo and the Department of Athletics & Recreation
In just 60 years, the University of Waterloo has become a leading comprehensive university with 34,000 full- and part-time students in undergraduate and graduate programs. Consistently ranked Canada’s most innovative university, UWaterloo is home to advanced research and teaching in science and engineering, health, environment, arts and social sciences. From quantum computing and nanotechnology to clinical psychology and health sciences research, Waterloo brings ideas and brilliant minds together, inspiring innovations with real impact today and in the future.
Home to one of the largest and most comprehensive recreation and varsity athletics programs, Warrior Athletics has played an important role in the rise of UWaterloo since 1957. By exploring and examining the triumphs and trials of the Warriors varsity athletic and recreational programs, it is easy to see the impact that students, athletes, coaches and staff have had in shaping the athletic tradition at UWaterloo, while at the same time, the unprecedented growth of UWaterloo has continued to shape the lives of all UWaterloo students and student-athletes.
HeForShe
In May 2015, UW President Feridun Hamdullahpur accepted an invitation from the UN Women’s HeForShe campaign for UW to participate in their IMPACT 10x10x10 framework. HeForShe is a global effort to engage men and boys in removing the social and cultural barriers that prevent women and girls from achieving their potential, and together positively reshaping society. The IMPACT 10x10x10 framework involves 10 Heads of State, 10 CEOs, and 10 University Presidents to advance gender equity. We are proud to be the only Canadian organization invited to be involved.
As a Campus Advocate for UWaterloo’s HeForShe commitment, Athletic Director Roly Webster and the Department has created specific goals for Athletics & Recreation. These include increased support for scholarships for female student-athletes, increased support for female coaches, and increased support for female specific programming.
All funds raised through the Waterloo Classic will go to support the above initiatives through the Women’s Sport Initiative Fund. This fund provides direct support for female student-athletes and coaches, allowing for increased investment in coaching and professional development, scholarships, support for teams and individuals participating in national championships and international tournaments like the FISU games and the Olympics, national and international award receptions, and other unique initiatives.
