Our story…

Carol’s Rice and Beans has been a successful school based food program since 2011. With schools closed, it has now moved into the community. Communal kitchens have been created to often prepare over 200 meals a day for people in a neighborhood. This community lost all of its spring employment that usually carries them through the summer months. Since Covid did not make its way here until long after it began up north, the fall looks to be very bleak for a tourism based economy. Your support of a participant in this event will enable hundreds of students and their family members to continue receiving at least one meal a day until these folks can work again. Overwhelmingly, the participants in this fundraiser are also people who have been supporting this community for years, and would rather be down here distributing food, but this is their best way to continue their dedication without having the opportunity to be present. We thank you all for caring.

Description

For ten years, AMISTAD CANADA (AC) has been working to improve the lives of Mexicans-in-need through health and education Projects delivered in partnership with fourteen Mexican NGOs. 


Projects include: mobile medical-dental service to remote communities; healthy school meals; underwriting medical care for sick and disabled children; supplemental classes in subjects such as literacy, computer skills, English and the arts; primary to post-secondary scholarships; a school for the Deaf; and a therapy centre for children with various disabilities.


AC participation in the Scotiabank Charity Challenge will provide Mexican-Canadians, and other runners who are attached to Mexico, an opportunity to support these initiatives.
