Our story…
We are proud to participate in the Homeboy Industries 5K to honor a truly life-changing organization that has given so much to the people and city of Los Angeles and has been a beacon of hope and example to other cities across the world.
We also walk to celebrate and remember those that we have loved and lost over the years.
The DuRoss/Conway family walked the first Homeboy 5K in 2013 as a tribute to Eileen DuRoss (Conway) who passed away from cancer in 2012. She loved any excuse to exercise and loved Homeboy. Every Christmas always consisted of some sort of item from the Homeboy Gift Shop for the family and she saw chemo appointments at USC Norris as a built-in excuse for a visit and another tour of Homeboy. It seemed like a sign that the Homeboy 5K existed and was so close to her birthday of October 5th.
Her infectious love for Homeboy and the 5K continued to grow each year. Mike Conway (Eileen’s brother) drove all the way from Santa Rosa one year to walk and see where Homeboy was located. He quickly started to spread the word about the organization to everyone he knew, encouraged others to see the documentary and read (and gifted) Father G’s books. Mike passed away in December of 2020.
Eileen and Mike were avid Van Morrison fans and both left this world too soon in many eyes, but impacted it profoundly in the time they were here. Always making a quiet impact and impression wherever they went, always showing true love and understanding, the most incredible listeners, always finding out how to connect uniquely to each person and seeing who stood before them just as they currently were and embracing them fully, always expressing compassion at its highest level, and always excited for the next adventure.
We dedicate this 5K to both of them and welcome all to participate for this great cause and to remember anyone special in your life (past or present) that has impacted you, loved you, challenged you to be better and do more in the precious time that we have on this earth.
Into the Mystic by Van Morrison
We were born before the wind
Also, younger than the sun
'Ere the bonnie boat was won
As we sailed into the mystic
Hark now, hear the sailors cry
Smell the sea and feel the sky
Let your soul and spirit fly
Into the mystic
Yeah, when that fog horn blows
I will be coming home
Yeah, when that fog horn blows
I wanna hear it
I don't have to fear it
