My Story…
This year I am running in honour of Brad Jacobsen, my friend and colleague who passed away this year after battling a long illness. Brad became a quadriplegic early in his adult life, sustaining his injury as vivacious and energetic man. Unwilling to let his injury get the better of him, he found ways to adjust and adapt so he could live his life to the fullest. He was a pioneer, hiking the West Coast Trail, and creating a community of friends and allies to help him along the way.
Brad attracted a following wherever he went. With his deep voice, good looks and charm, Brad radiated positivity. He cared deeply about his community. Brad recognized the power of peer support for people living with spinal cord injury, and he very openly shared his personal experiences and positive outlook to help others struggling to adjust, adapt and thrive. Through his role at SCI BC, he met with thousands of people in hospital whose lives had been turned upside down by spinal cord injury, helping them, and their families to see a way through. His vision for helping others was the inspiration, drive and heart behind our Peer Support Program.
This year, I will be running, and raising money for the Peer Support program, to honour Brad’s memory and carry his legacy forward. And I hope that your kindness and generosity can help us, too.
