Help Nicole raise money

For participating in 2021 Scotiabank Vancouver Half-Marathon & 5K

My Story…

My name is Nicole and I have been working at Dixon Transition Society for 15 years. I completed my first Charity Challenge 5k in 2015 with my little sidekick Amelia riding in a stroller in front of me. This year, she has decided to join me in the kids' challenge so we are the Dixon Dynamic Duo!

With my own kids, I have seen the impact a global pandemic can have on the lives of children - routines are disrupted, anxiety and isolation are magnified exponentially, and nothing in the world feels "normal" any more. But imagine how that experience is magnified for kids staying in a transition house.

Since the Pandemic started, 82% of agencies serving survivors of domestic violence reported an increase in the frequency and severity of violence being reported. Abusers have changed their tactics, increasing violence in the midst of the isolation, and using fears of COVID-19 to exert additional control over their victims. (source: Ending Violence Association of Canada)

Kids have no control: they are witnessing or experiencing this uptick of violence at home. When moms choose to leave, they are finding themselves in a strange new environment of a transition home or second stage program. Kids are often blaming themselves for the violence, the loss of the familiar, and they need extra reassurance.

Dixon provides child support to these kids in spite of losing funding for their child support program. We know that children who grow up to respect women and learn how to express emotions in a healthy way are an indicator of the cycle of violence being broken. We want the children in our care to grow up safe and happy, with every opportunity to succeed and go the distance.

Please help Amelia and I to go the Distance for Dixon to keep these vital services going for another year!

Thank you :)
