Support the mission to save and heal lives through donation!
I am honored to be running this years Falmouth Road Race for the New England Donor Services in memory of my Uncle Bob. This will be my 3rd year running for this amazing organization!
In 2010 my uncle began feeling short of breath. It continue to worsen to the point where he had to wear oxygen at all times.
While he was undergoing tests and scans, it was subsequently found that he had kidney cancer and needed one of his kidneys removed. After recovering from his surgery he was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary hypertension. The only course of treatment was a double lung transplant.
After more testing and discussions, my uncle was deemed as a high risk patient and was unable to get his transplant in Massachusetts. He went for a second opinion at Duke University Hospital in North Carolina. Eventually he was placed on the transplant list.
On December 23, 2012 my Uncle Bob received his double lung transplant. Since that day my uncle didn't take a day for granted. Even on the days he didn't feel well he always lived his life to the fullest and never complained. He spent the summers down the Cape with family and friends. He went away to Florida every January with his wife and close friends. He got to see his daughter graduate high school and his son graduate college. He got 6 more years of just experiencing those little moments in life that we often take granted.
Unfortunately 2 years ago Bob passed away. Over the years the same meds that were keeping him alive, were also putting stress on his other organs.
The funds that are raised will go towards educating others and spreading awareness about organ and tissue donation. My Uncle always thought of others first, even during his sickest days. Before he passed away my uncle and I talked about me running for the Donate Life Team. I couldn't think of a better way of honoring my uncle than by running for this organization.
There wasn't a day that went by that he didn't think of and pray for his organ donor and his family. This is my way of paying it forward and honoring a man that was such a big part of the woman that I am today.
I know this past year has been difficult for everyone in so many different ways but if your able I hope you consider donating to this amazing organization, in memory of an amazing man.
I hope you and your families are well.
