Our Story

My Story...

In January of 2019, my son Paul Thomas Gordon III was born.  One minute after he was born, a nurse in the delivery room noticed that he looked blue and began administering oxygen.  One hour after he was born, the doctors at our local hospital informed us that they would be transporting Paul to Boston Children's Hospital themselves as he was too critical to wait for the BCH transport team to arrive. This is when they informed us that Paul was born with a very serious heart disease and would need surgical intervention to survive. One day later, we would be at BCH having a similar discussion on Paul's condition and getting a glimpse of the long road ahead.  After one week, we were waiting at his side as the best surgical plan was being discussed among the cardiology team. One year later, Paul had been through two open heart surgeries with his third and most complex surgery to follow in the summer of 2020.

Our family was lucky to have access to a heart center like Boston Children's that would take a chance on surgical options that would allow him to have the use of both sides of his heart. Paul, today, is the most amazing, energetic, and affectionate child you could meet. CHD (Congenital Heart Disease) launched us into a world we knew nothing about prior to the day he was born, and it has forever changed our lives.  At first, you think "why me?" and then that transitions to "why him?".  It is Paul that endures the challenges of this unforgiving disease, and you realize quickly that your only job is to support him through his journey; to give him the richest life possible and to bring awareness to a battle many children and families are fighting on a daily basis.

The Live4Evan foundation played an integral role in our journey during several lengthy stays in Boston after Paul's surgeries. My wife and I were able to be with him every day and would take turns staying at the L4E apartment so we could get the much needed rest we needed after long days at the hospital.  In a city where options are limited and the financial costs become quickly burdensome, L4E allows families like ours to remain deeply involved in our son's care. The weight of CHD is heavy, but the support of organizations like L4E make it lighter. Please help me in supporting L4E so they are able to provide this same type of support to as many families as possible.
