My Story…
It was a typical Sunday night on October 30th, 2016. I was in graduate school at the University of Virginia at the time, and was just settling down to relax and watch some TV in my room. My phone rang- it was my mom calling for our usual Sunday check-ins. But instantly I could tell by her voice that something was seriously wrong.
My younger brother, Hale, a member of the Yale cross country team at the time, had taken his own life. I’ll never forget the shock and numbness I felt in that moment. It still doesn’t seem real at times. Anyone who knew Hale knew what zest he brought to life. He was 100% all-in on everything he did and had an infectious, witty personality that brightened the mood of everyone around him. But he also struggled with a mental illness that we still don’t, and never will, understand. I don’t know what was going through his head that evening, or if he was even in his own head, but I just wish he had some other recourse of action, someone to reach out to, or any alternative to the path he chose.
It’s my hope that by running the Falmouth Road Race on behalf of Cape and Islands Suicide Prevention Coalition, I can make an impact, however small it may be, on helping other people who find themselves in Hale’s situation.
