My Story…

Please consider donating to our 5K to help raise funds for SCAD (Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection) research. There are very few studies on SCAD due to it being underdiagnosed or missed which has resulted in the death of many young healthy women. More research means hopefully correct diagnosis the first time, education to medical staff to know SCAD signs and save lives, understanding what medications SCAD survivors need (different than your "normal" heart attack meds) to help maintain a healthy life, education on how to cope as a survivor, studying causes and possible preventions for future SCAD heart attacks, etc....

You all know my story of being in TJMAXX on a Monday morning (October 23, 2017) w/ a 3yr old & 7yr old in tow after dropping off my 5yr old at school. Out of nowhere I broke out in a cold sweat, it felt like an elephant was stepping on my heart twisting his foot like it was putting out a cigarette butt (it was incredibly painful), both of my arms started tingling, I got dizzy and needed to sit down right in the middle of the toy section, and then I got nauseous (made it to the floor in the bathroom) and could not stand back up.

There are more details to the story, but what is important is that I had ALL of the classic heart attack signs yet when I went to the ER I was told I was just "tired" being a 36yr old mom of 3 little kiddos and that I just needed to reduce my stress. My 1st EKG was normal, my 1st blood work was normal, and my heart monitor was normal minus some PVCs. After 8 hours of repeatedly telling them my heart hurt they were discharging me. As they were going over the discharge paperwork tachycardia popped out of my heart monitor & only then did they go and check my 2nd bloodwork which showed that yes in fact I was having a heart attack! I was not taken to the cath lab until the next afternoon causing my LAD "widowmaker" to become 100% blocked a true definition of a widowmaker dissection heart attack. I had a stent put in and when I came out of the cath lab two cardiologist (and every one since that I have interacted with) said they could not believe I was still alive and had I been sent home I would have for sure died that night. I was still co-sleeping with my 3yr old and the thought of him waking up next to me dead still brings tears to my eyes.

Moral of the story is be your own health advocate, listen to your body, know the signs of a heart attack ANYONE can have one, know CPR, and call 9-1-1. For me all of those are true in addition to keep fighting every day to be here for my 3 beautiful children!
