Erica’s Wish
A Virtual 5K and 10K to raise awareness of childhood cancer.
Funds raised go directly to the Erica's Wish Blanket Program at SickKids.
In 2009 the Erica's Wish run began. Erica was a fabulous 12 year old girl and a provincial gymnast with goals of the Olympics in her future. One fateful day her femur broke during practice and Osteosarcoma was discovered. (The same cancer as Terry Fox). After several rounds of chemotherapy, a leg amputation and multiple trials; Erica's cancer went into remission. Erica's Wish was her dream to comfort children with cancer and to raise awareness of this horrible disease. To accomplish this wish, each month 30 blankets are donated to the Oncology Department at SickKids Hospital. Upon admission, children receive a blanket to comfort them during their tests and treatments. Erica's story is told to give strength and comfort to other children fighting cancer just as she did. Her story and the blanket helps children and their families find hope. Erica herself has been an ambassador to SickKids and done numerous speaking engagements about childhood cancer and her fight. The run ended in 2014 as Erica’s dreams of going to the Olympics had come true, now in paracanoe. Erica was officially training for the Rio Paralympics. Even thought the race ended the blanket program has continued strong through the on-going efforts of special people who continue to help support this important cause. In 2020, we celebrated 10 years of the blanket program with an Erica’s Wish Virtual Event. We want to keep the momentum going in 2021 as its Erica’s 25th birthday. A girl who surpassed the odds against her and is now reaching the Quarter Century Club. A celebration we will have!
