My Story…
Last year I set my sights on a serious personal challenge, to ride the highway from Port Hardy to Victoria in a single uninterrupted journey.
It was a massive ride, totalling 515km, 22:32 hrs pedalling and over 4000m in elevation gained. The whole journey from Port Hardy to Victoria took 33:46hrs. A third of that time was for breaks and questioning myself and the plan.
It was only with the support from friends, a band of brothers that this personal goal was achieved.
Many asked me why it was not a ride for charity. The straight answer is that it was just a test of myself.
I did not plan to revisit this epic ride this year, but a new friend and mentor in cycling inspired me to attempt it again.
Now that I know I can do it, my goal is to reduce my total time by 6-8 hours. Way less stopping. Way less questioning. Way more doing it for a cause.
This year we both start in Port Hardy on Saturday August 20th at 2am. Our finish line will be Mile Zero, Victoria, though we will arrive at different times. If all goes according to plan we will make it back in time for the YANA BBQ in Comox, hopefully after catching up on some well earned sleep in the support van.
The last 2 years have been hard on all of us. The pandemic, social isolation, and disruptions of all kinds have affected the mental health of each and every one of us. It was during this time that I discovered endurance cycling and adopted it as a coping strategy.
I am doing this for anyone that ever struggles, be it physically, mentally, financially, or has felt alone in life, in love. All hills, mountains, they have tops. They flatten out onto plateaus and into valleys. What seems impossible, is not.
Remember, You Are Not Alone.
