Panel with Q&A: Career Development & Mentorship
Mission: Possible. Industry Leaders. How they got there & how to bring you with them.
Women and Femme of Color continue to strive toward creating an open and inclusive environment in the running industry despite how it operates in ways that challenge those goals, making it difficult for us to engage. In this session, women at various career stages will discuss the challenges they faced while advancing in their careers and the tactics they used to overcome them. Gain insight on how they navigate in a sometimes unwelcoming environment, how they use their position and influence to make a difference, and how to share those learnings through mentorship.
A stretch session will follow to further the conversation and give opportunity to dive deeper into the topics covered during the panel discussions. The panelists will guide us through open dialogue which will give you the opportunity to share your perspective, gain insight, and learn from other attendees.
Panel with Q&A: Community
Blend In or Break Out. Boldly Building Communities to Effect Change.
Community is much more than having common interests. Community is a unified movement. However, there are challenges and barriers that prevent some run communities from thriving. How do we as Women and Femme of Color represent, build, and grow in places that don't reflect us? How do we capitalize on our differences to unify as a people in the running industry? Panelists will share how they use community to amplify their message and provide insight into best practices, accountability, and allyship. Listen and join in as they share an open conversation about their experiences and how we ALL play a crucial part in the broader running community.
Round Robin with Take The Lead Sponsors
Connect on a personal level with the Take The Lead sponsors and your fellow attendees in an intimate group setting. Learn the intentionality behind the sponsor’s participation, uncover available opportunities and programs that benefit Women and Femme of Color in the running industry, and seek professional career advice. Timed rotations will allow you to connect with all sponsors and begin building authentic relationships with industry-leading brands that prioritize diversity, equity and inclusion.
Brave Conversations Workshop
As Women and Femme of Color it can be challenging to show up and be authentic when the space around us doesn’t reflect who we are. It can be difficult to advocate for ourselves when we find ourselves in different and challenging situations. These moments are when brave conversations are born. Learn how to rise up when you’re feeling like you’d rather back down. This workshop will help you to exercise your voice and allow you to boldly be your authentic self in the running industry.

RUNNING WHILE BLACK: Finding Freedom in a Sport That Wasn’t Built for Us
Penguin/Portfolio; release date October 18, 2022
A searing exposé on the whiteness of running, a supposedly egalitarian sport, and a call to reimagine the industry. Balancing the benefits of running in her life against the realities of white supremacy in the sport and in America, Désir realized that the very existence of being a Black runner can hold the power to disrupt the white narrative while also carving out space for Black people. To help make running more inclusive and welcoming to people of color, Désir founded Harlem Run, an NYC-based running movement, and Run 4 All Women, which has raised over $150,000 for Planned Parenthood and $270,000 for Black Voters Matter.
