My Story…

There are certain times in life when young people find themselves trying to gain independence and succeed on their own. Feeling supported and inspired means the world to them, and can change the path of their lives. Education is the best way to empower kids in underserved communities, and the tool that is vital for success is computer access. Comkids has been giving laptops and digital literacy training to grade 7 students across the GTA for almost 20 years, and I have been a proud board member since 2016. These kids might not otherwise have the necessary tools to succeed in school and maximize their potential, without the support of this fantastic charity: Whether we walk or run, we strive to close the digital divide!

Description

For over 20 years, ComKids has been supporting Grade 7 students in low-equity, underserved communities across the Toronto, Hamilton, and Niagara Regions; providing essential digital infrastructure, educational content, and support for those facing significant barriers to digital inclusion, digital literacy, and academic success. Since our inception the significance of digital inclusion has grown exponentially as technology becomes integral to daily life, compounded further by COVID-19, as distanced learning becomes essential for successful engagement in academic activities.

Areas of activity:

Access for All: Provision of free, consistent, and reliable access to technology within their homes; including a brand-new Chromebook and internet access. Partnering with local School Boards to identify young people most in need.

Empowered Learners: Delivery of in-person and online Digital Literacy Master Classes (content partners include Google, TELUS Wise, and CIVIX); developing essential digital literacy skills required for academic success and motivating further digital learning necessary for positive engagement in higher education and future labour markets.
