My Story…

Closing the digital divide is becoming more important every year as classrooms become more digitally dependent. Without consistent access to technology, students are immediately put at a disadvantage and the learning gap continues to widen. A student’s educational outcome is impacted by a lack of access to quality technology and digital skills to meaningfully engage online. What makes ComKids so unique and critical is that not only are they providing students with their own devices, but they’re digitally empowering them. They focus on holistic learning opportunities that reflect the complexity of the students’ digital lives. ComKids are investing in improving academic achievement and narrowing gaps that are related to economic status for these young people. I am asking if you would consider donating to the race team. Every dollar truly counts and will help to reach their goal.

Description

For over 20 years, ComKids has been supporting Grade 7 students in low-equity, underserved communities across the Toronto, Hamilton, and Niagara Regions; providing essential digital infrastructure, educational content, and support for those facing significant barriers to digital inclusion, digital literacy, and academic success. Since our inception the significance of digital inclusion has grown exponentially as technology becomes integral to daily life, compounded further by COVID-19, as distanced learning becomes essential for successful engagement in academic activities.

Areas of activity:

Access for All: Provision of free, consistent, and reliable access to technology within their homes; including a brand-new Chromebook and internet access. Partnering with local School Boards to identify young people most in need.

Empowered Learners: Delivery of in-person and online Digital Literacy Master Classes (content partners include Google, TELUS Wise, and CIVIX); developing essential digital literacy skills required for academic success and motivating further digital learning necessary for positive engagement in higher education and future labour markets.
