About CMHA
Our Vision: Mentally Healthy People in a Healthy Society
Founded in 1918, the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) is a national charity that helps maintain and improve mental health for all Canadians. As the nation-wide leader and champion for mental health, CMHA promotes the mental health of all and supports the resilience and recovery of people experiencing mental illness.
In BC, mental health, substance use and addictive behaviour are within the scope of the organization.
Through our family of over 100 local, provincial and national locations across Canada, CMHA provides a wide range of innovative services and supports tailored to and in partnership with our communities. Mental health begins where you live, learn, work and play. Together, we are making a difference.

What happens?
Through fun and challenging recreational activities Steps encourages youth to interact in a nurturing and non-judgemental environment while promoting healthy living habits. Activities like hiking, yoga and laser tag build self-confidence and strengthen both social and personal fitness goals.
The program touches on all aspects of wellness aiming to equip participants with understanding, skills and strategies for living and maintaining a mentally healthy lifestyle.
An open group chat between the Steps coordinator and participants keeps youth connected and supported throughout the week. One-on-one meet-ups are also offered as needed.
How does it help?
Steps has been proven to be effective in youth 13-18, with 100% of participants reporting a decrease in depression and anxiety symptoms. Clinicians are not only hearing that their clients enjoy Steps, but are also noticing noticeable differences in their clients’ presentations. Youth are asking to stay on with the program and are telling their friends about us, and parents are often thanking us for the work that we do. Steps is offered in two cohorts: Youth aged 13-18 Older youth aged 19-29For more information or to join the program, contact Steps Youth Program Coordinator, Claire Ramsfield, at claire.ramsfield@cmha.bc.ca
