Thank you for signing up to volunteer for the 11th Annual HBCUs Run the District 5K Run/Walk sponsored by Alfred Street Baptist Church! You will be an important part of making this day successful. Please enter your affiliate organization to ensure the proper volunteer credit.
A conference call will be held before the event to go over the expectation of duties and to answer any questions. Training will be provided for course marshals and those working registration/packet pickup.

Volunteer Activities and Descriptions
BEFORE RACE DAY
Bag Stuffing: Prepare items for packet pickup. Pack items for mailing.
Packet Pickup: Keep track of who received their packet at packet pickup in DC Navy Yard (exact locations to be announced).
- Assign bibs
- Distribute race packets, t-shirts and medals to runners and walkers
- Move items to next location or shut down and secure items for next day
Load U-Haul for Event: Note: You will need transportation to the storage unit.
- Load items into U-haul from storage unit
RACE DAY
Bag Drop Off: Check in bag for runners. Secure the items until runners claim their items.
Greeters: Cheerfully guide people to various areas at Nationals Park.
- Direct runners/walkers to registration/race area
- Direct vendors to setup area
- Help answer questions and provide directions
Main Stage Assistants: Assist Race Director at the Main Stage to ensure a timely start to activities.
- Answer questions and assist dignitaries
- Receive DJ
- Ensure speakers and scholarship recipients are in place for ceremony
Morning Set Up Crew: Note: This activity may require some heavy lifting (25-50 lbs). This is an extremely important early morning activity. Please be on time!
- Unload truck
- Set up tables, chairs, trash cans, hang banners, etc.
- Decorate the venue (set up balloons, place tablecloths, place name cards, etc.)
Parking Garage Attendants: Direct participants and vendor/exhibitors to proper parking locations.
- Ensure vendors/exhibitors move their vehicles to the proper place once they unload their vehicles.
Volunteer Check In: Check in volunteers and direct them to their assigned areas.
Alumni Row/Vendor/Health Fair Assistants: Assist alumni representatives, vendors, and health fair or other exhibitors.
- Help with set up
- Encourage participants to visit exhibitors
- Note: Working your organization's table on Alumni Row does not count towards the race volunteer requirement.
Registration: Conduct onsite registration and check in pre-registered participants.
- Distribute runners' bib numbers and timing devices and t-shirts
- Take notes to timing company as needed
- Collect items for bag drop
- Distribute swag after race
- Sell extra shirts from previous events
Course Marshals: Ensure the runners/walkers have a safe run & that no vehicular traffic enters the course. You will be placed at key spots on the course. Keep a watchful eye on traffic and cheer on the race participants.
- Assist with the smooth and successful start of the race
- Keep the emergency lane clear for emergency vehicles, cyclists, and spectators; alert pedestrians and runners entering the race site to approaching bicycles and vehicles
- Call in medical emergencies; take note of your location (refer to the number on the nearest light pole) so that you can be exact if you need to make a medical call
- Move runners smoothly through the post-finish area once they cross the finish line
- Alert pedestrians and runners exiting the race site to approaching bicycles and vehicles
- Monitor turns and intersections
- Ensure participants are off racecourse by slated time
- Pick up trash and signs after race is over
Water Stations: Fill and distribute water cups to runners/walkers at various locations on the racecourse.
- Cheer on the runners and walkers
Clean Up Crew: Note: This activity may require some heavy lifting (25-50 lbs), standing, bending, and getting dirty. Needs will be rolling and will start once race is over.
- Taking down signage
- Moving stalls
- Cleaning trash from the surrounding area
- Break down tables, tents, chairs, trash cans, banners, and fencing
- Load materials and supplies onto trucks for return and storage
Unload U-Haul for Return to Storage: Note: You will need transportation to the storage unit.
- Unload items from U-haul into storage unit
AFTER RACE DAY
Package Items to Mail Swag: Prepare items to be mailed to virtual participants.
