My Story

Two years ago I ran my first 10k race at the Toronto Zoo. The sense of accomplishment and runner's high was something I was extremely proud of and excited to share. No less than two hours after I crossed that finish line, that high came crashing down.

I've always bragged about my neighbours, the most loving family and sweetest kids. I have the privilege of babysitting Jack & Jordy since they were teeny tiny. In fact, my family was Jordy's first visitors when she came home from the hospital when she was born. Neighbours turned chosen family, this sentiment has proven stronger than ever when our sweet Jordy passed on September 15, 2023. Jordy was the brightest light and loudest giggle in every room. Lover of all animals and if it were up to her, the world would be covered in pink.

Friends and family have a Jordy sized hole in our hearts, now and forever.

Jordy's brother, Jack, and mom, Lindsay attended my wedding just after the first anniversary of her passing. It was extremely important to Dean and I to honour Jordy at our wedding, she would have been in a bright sparkly dress and twirling on the dancefloor all night. Instead, big brother Jack took home the "best dressed" award with ease, in a bright pink suit. The resilience these two have shown is nothing short of remarkable and so incredibly inspiring.

Two years ago, I couldn't imagine running this race again. The heaviness that tied Jordy to this race, made running again very hard. This year, my goal is to reclaim this race, and fundraise in honour of Jordy's love for animals.

If you have made it this far, thank you for taking the time to read. I hope you consider donating and/or running, in honour of Jordy Pepperall.

When completed, the Toronto Zoo Community Conservation Centre will be a tangible reminder of your commitment to protecting wildlife and wild spaces for years to come.

With your support, this new Community Conservation Centre will:

  • Empower the next generation of conservationists by providing transformative educational opportunities that equip them with the knowledge and skills to protect wildlife and wild spaces.
  • Engage youth and the broader community through hands-on learning experiences that spark meaningful action to protect the planet and nurture future leaders.
  • Offer free-access spaces that connect the public with Canadian species like River otters and Blanding’s turtles, allowing everyone—whether local youth or global visitors—to engage with and contribute to our conservation efforts.

The need has never been more urgent, and each of us has the power to make a meaningful impact. By supporting the Oasis ZooRun, you’re becoming part of the solution to protect the natural world for future generations.
