Kathy's Story:

 In 2016 I was working as a Triage Nurse in an Emergency Department, and it was a typical day, as always, busy. My tech and I just ran outside to get a person who wasn't breathing, and we brought that person in and went back to the triage. When I returned, I didn't feel very well. I asked one of the techs to do an EKG on me, and when she did, she ran to get Dr. Ginsburg. I really don't remember a lot from that day. I was flown to a hospital in DC and went straight into the cath lab. This is when they found that I was having a Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection. I was in and out of consciousness, but I do remember asking Dr. Rao if I was going to live, and he told me that no one died on his table. He later told me I was his first SCAD patient. Most people who have a SCAD do not survive. It turned out that my entire LAD had been dissected. He could put in 2 stents but couldn't get the 3rd one in. It wasn't until later that day that they told me that I had a heart attack that lasted all day. The ICU nurse never left my side. When I was discharged, I had to have an external defibrillator for 9 months. My life changed completely. No one had any answers as to why this happened to me. They have a strong feeling it is something genetic since my Dad had a spontaneous death at the age of 37 years. This race is a fundraiser for SCAD Research. We need to know why.
