In memory of my beautiful mom, Mary Wild, who passed away January 26th, 2022, at 63.

It's difficult to articulate the pain that is a watching a loved one battle cancer or any disease, getting to the point where the treatment isn't working and they can no longer fight it. Even the realization that her death was around the corner broke me. I remember sitting next to her when I heard the oncologist say she had "weeks to months" and felt a piece of me break. 

Caretaking is hard when you're already grieving the loss and scrambling to try to spend as much quality time as you can with them. The idea of my mom going into hospice care was almost harder because it meant that the end was even closer, and I didn't know what it was like. I worried that it was going to be a clinical room with a hospital bed and a chair, and my mom wouldn't be comfortable when it was time. 

While my mom spent just a week in hospice, the nurses and volunteers took so much off of our plates and allowed me and my family to focus on what was the most important for all of us: being able to spend that time in our last moments with her, without being worried about her care. They went above and beyond all the time. When we would leave, we'd return to find that they had put her favourite music on so that she could listen while we were away. Words cannot begin to describe how grateful I am to the wonderful and compassionate staff and volunteers and to all of the donations made prior that made that quality of care possible for her in her last moments.
