Where to start with why we *love* Envision Blind Sports so much? As many of you know, my 11 year old son (Gabriel’s brother), Alexander, is blind, but it has not slowed down his passion for life! For the past two summers, he has attended Envision Blind Sports' week-long sleepaway camp on the Penn State campus in Erie, PA. There, visually impaired and blind children are given the opportunity to play over 30 sports using adapted methods. Blindness extends well beyond the loss of sight. Sleep cycles are irregular. Empathy can be challenging (kids don't see hurt on another's face). Eating neatly is difficult (try eating a meal with your eyes closed and see how it goes). The Envision staff and volunteers are highly trained, compassionate, and wise people who know exactly what they are doing in guiding their campers to have exceptional weeks. Alexander comes home each summer not only with a renewed love for sports and activity, but self-confidence and seeming truly happy. Our family is driving all of the way from NC to Pittsburgh, PA just so we can be a part of the Envision Blind Sports team for the Pittsburgh Half-Marathon this May, because we want to thank this organization for the love it has shown my son.
