Eighteen years of friendship. Different cities, different chapters — but never once a different level of love. This is my ride-or-die, my best friend, Jyening.

In March 2025, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The kind of news that stops your heart. But Jyening never stopped. Through every hard day, she remained fierce, bright, and fully herself — a devoted mother to her daughters Leona and Maia, a powerful voice for the Black community, and the kind of friend that makes you feel lucky just to know her.

In October 2025, she rang the bell. I was so proud of her — of her courage, her grace, and everything she carried and still chose to show up with.

This October, I'm lacing up for my very first half marathon in her honour — the same woman I used to run 10km races alongside back in Edmonton, now my reason to go further than I ever have before. Twenty-one kilometres for a woman who gives the world far more than that every single day. Every step is a celebration of her strength, her light, and the beautiful life she continues to build.
