The Cumby Race Rules and Policies
It is important that you read these policies carefully before you register. Safety is our top priority, and these policies are in place to protect you, fellow racers, and volunteers.
We have endeavoured to outline all the policies and rules for The Cumby. Any issues that may arise which are not addressed here are to be resolved by decision of the Race Director.
Registration Limits
Sign Up Early! Our permits and insurance set limits on the number of racers we can have in each race. We do not have the capacity to manage wait lists if a race is full.
Transfers and Refunds
We will allow racer transfers (between races) until April 19 only if there is room remaining in the race distance you wish to transfer to. A transfer fee will apply and you will need to pay the difference if the new event fee is more than your original registration fee. You may not transfer or sell your registration to another runner at any time.
The Cumby is entirely a fund-raising event and, as always, all net proceeds from our event go directly to the Cumberland Community Forest Society. So please treat your registration fee as support of this great organization - all race registrations are final, sorry, no refunds
Age Requirements
Full Cumby (25km) registrants must be 16 or older on race day. We encourage youth to participate in our shorter races and trust that parents and guardians will know their child's athletic capacity. We strongly recommend that youth run with an adult AND ARE ABLE TO FOLLOW A MARKED COURSE- this is an important race safety issue. Please be aware that this is a wilderness course with may uphill climbs, rocks, roots and steep pitches.
Waivers
When registering, you will be asked to indicate acceptance of waivers for yourself and any other racers you are registering at the same time. The general waiver includes a parental/guardian waiver for any participants under the age of 18. It is your duty to inform any racers you register that you have signed a waiver on their behalf. By completion of on-line registration all participants are considered to have accepted all the terms and conditions of the waiver.
Paces and Cut-Off Times
The Full, Half and Quarter Cumby are running races. Please be prepared to run most of the race.
Cut off for the 25 km Full Cumby course is 3hrs 30” from the start (18km at Aid Station #3).
Cut off for the 16 km Half Cumby course is 2hrs15" from the start (10.5 km at Aid Station #3)
There is no cutoff time for either the Quarter or Cumbino races.
Use good judgement when you choose your race.
Bib Pick Up
Racers must each pick up their own bib. Adults may be asked for picture ID to receive their bib. Always have your bib visibly displayed on your front.
Unable to Finish (DNF)
If you need to end your race prematurely, go to the next marshal or aid station, and announce your decision. The marshal will direct you to the possible ways back to race central. You may have to walk or wait until a ride is available. It is very important that you do not leave the race without alerting a race official that you are not completing it. You must also check in with the timing crew at the finish line at Race Central. If we have not been alerted that you are not completing the race we will need to send out a search party while you might be relaxing at home in the bath. Grrrrr! Medical staff and Race Directors have the authority to remove any racer if they deem it unsafe for the runner to continue.
Injured Runners
If you come across an injured runner, you must stop and provide assistance. Stay with the injured runner, the next runner will go to the nearest marshal or checkpoint to get help. The contact number for Race Central will be provided on the back of your bib. There will be mobile first aid attendants, as well as first aid available at the aid stations and Race Central. If you are injured, ask for help from the next runner, the attendant will come to you.
If you remain or assist an injured racer, you will receive a complimentary entry next year as a thank you for supporting your fellow race community. Please inform us if you are a participant who takes this action so we can show our appreciation.
Course Markings
The courses will be well marked with signage and pink ribbons, especially at trail junctions. Runners must be aware and stay on the designated, marked trail. Organizers reserve the right to change the route from the posted trail map if required.
Gear, etc.
We are aiming to be a cup-free event, so if you would like to enjoy beverages, please bring your own cup.
We recommend that runners aim to be self sufficient by carrying water, fuel and electrolytes as you may need. There will be aid stations for all the courses, check out the locations on the course maps.
No Nordic poles. No baby strollers. No dogs. No smoking. No littering. No bad behavior.
One ear bud only if you absolutely must. No exceptions as we need you to hear the mountain bikers, animals and marshals trying to get your attention.
Trail Conditions
All trails have been inspected; however, there are always hazards as this is a wilderness race. Be mindful of branches at eye level, and unstable conditions on steep hills. Lift your feet!
We recommend that you walk all the bridges. Assume all bridges and boardwalks may be slippery and keep to the center. Some bridges have a considerable drop off.
Other Trail Users
We do not have exclusive access to the lands and they are used by many people - dog walkers, hikers, runners, elders, mountain bikers and feral Cumberland children. Please respect everyone on the trails.
Volunteers
Last but the most important. Take a moment to thank at least one of the many, many volunteers and organizers who gave up many hours of preparation and their Saturday to support you on your race day! We have the very best volunteers and that’s a factJ.
