The Val Nora 5K is held in memory and honor of Val Nora, a longtime OTR resident and friend who said OTR empowered her to live with independence and purpose, and she gave back through her fundraising. All proceeds support OTR’s Resident Service programs, helping residents live independently and with dignity.
“I love it here, because OTR helps residents like me live independently, with enrichment programming and well-trained Resident Service Coordinators.” — Val Nora
Valerie Clare Nora (“Val”) lived with determination and a deep commitment to others. Born with cerebral palsy, her life was never defined by limitations. With the support of her family and the opportunities she found through Over The Rainbow, Val built a life filled with independence, friendship, and purpose.
Everything changed when Val moved to OTR. For the first time, she had a home of her own, one that gave her not just accessibility but true independence. She built friendships, reconnected with her first boyfriend from high school, and embraced the routines and experiences that made life meaningful. What began as a place to live became the place where her life truly opened up.
Val didn’t just benefit from OTR; she believed in it. She became a passionate fundraiser, writing letters, making calls, and traveling across town to collect donations, often on her own. She gave back to the community that had given her so much, because she knew firsthand what it made possible.
Those closest to Val say she showed her love in small, constant ways, remembering people, giving gifts, sharing treats, and building lasting relationships. Even in death, her generosity continued, helping more than 75 people through organ donation.
Val’s life is a powerful reminder of what independence makes possible. She lived fully, gave generously, and left a lasting impact on everyone who knew her.
Her legacy lives on in every OTR resident who is able to live independently, with dignity, purpose, and a place to truly call home.
