TERRAIN AND ELEVATION
REFUND
Set within the expansive Te Hiku Forest, the Summit Forests Kaitaia Trail Run offers a unique trail experience on soft, sandy loam soil covered in pine needles, creating a cushioned and fast underfoot surface. The course includes sections of sandy gravel road, along with occasional boggy or muddy patches where footing can be unpredictable, so care is recommended in these areas.
The elevation profile shows that the course is largely runnable, with most of the climbing concentrated early. Within the first 2 km, runners encounter a couple of short but noticeable climbs that make up the majority of the total ascent (particularly for the 4 km distance). Beyond this, the 11.5 km and half marathon courses feature gently rolling terrain, with a series of gradual inclines and descents rather than long, sustained hills.
Overall elevation gain is moderate across all distances (approximately 50 m for 4 km, 90 m for 11.5 km, and 165 m for the half marathon), reflected in the elevation profile as smooth undulations rather than sharp spikes. This creates a flowing course that is well-suited to both first-time trail runners and those looking to maintain a steady pace while still enjoying some variation in terrain.
