For participating in SF Aloha Run for Peace

Our story…

If you were born and raised in San Francisco, you probably heard of the Mayor's Youth Employment and Education Program (MYEEP) or San Francisco Youth Works (SFYW) program. You might've also participated or even hosted some interns!

Our Workforce Department at the Japanese Community Youth Council (JCYC) works all year round to make sure we meet youth where they are and to help provide as many learning and job opportunities as we can. Our main priority is the youth that we serve, and through this San Francisco Aloha Run and Fundraiser, we all work together as a community to provide youths with scholarships to help them with their future and their dreams.

Anything you can donate goes towards the following scholarships:

Believe Scholarship (new)

The Julie Matsueda Believe Scholarship will provide a long-term commitment to selected preschool participants to be a partner in their journey towards adulthood. Awardees will receive a funded as well as annual contributions to a 529 college saving account, free/priority access to JCYC programs, and individual college advising.

Excellence Scholarship

The JCYC Excellence Scholarship supports High School Seniors who have committed to post-secondary education. Excellence scholarship are awarded to participants of JCYC programs and amounts are based on financial aid provided through other sources.

Pathways Scholarship

The JCYC Pathways Scholarship seeks to encourage families of our younger JCYC participants to start saving early for their child’s path to college. Families will be awarded scholarships to deposit into a ScholarShare account, which is a state-sponsored, 529 college savings account.

Thomatra Scott Scholarship

The Thomatra Scott Scholarship Fund was established to support JCYC’s Black & African American youth on their path to higher education. Awardees are selected based on their alignment with “Scotty’s” values of education, human rights, and racial justice

In addition, some of our proceeds will also be donated to the following non-profits whose missions are aligned with our goal this year, to Run for Peace.

United Playaz is a violence prevention and youth development organization that has been active in San Francisco for 25 years. Located in the SoMa district, the UP Clubhouse provides a safe and positive environment for youth to grow. The dedicated team members share similar backgrounds with the youth they serve, operating on the belief that communities thrive from within. Their goal is to offer a consistent ‘home’ that many of their kids lack in other areas of their lives.

Partnerships for Trauma Recovery (PTR) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to healing the psychological and psychosocial impacts of trauma among international survivors of human rights abuses, forced displacement resulting from war, persecution related to identity and beliefs, gender-based violence and other forms of interpersonal violence. PTR offers culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and linguistically accessible care for asylum seekers and refugees worldwide.

So whether you'e a MYEEP/SFYW participant/alumni, host site, or if you just heard of us, please take some time to share this fundraiser out and donate what you can to help our organization provide more of these opportunities. A little goes a long way.

These job opportunities and scholarships help support youth build themselves up to the person they want to become.
